Wreck "North Sea"
Sir, 3rd Octb 1859.
With reference to my Report of the 14th Ulto_ of the termination
of the inquiry as to the loss of the Steam Vessel "North Sea"
in which I informed you that the expenses incurred at
the adjourned enquiry should be started in another report
I beg to acquaint you that I summoned two
men viz:
George Spetch_Carpenter who was on the Bridge
with the mate at the time the accident happened.
I summoned him on the 9 Ulto_At that time he
was Carpenter of the Vessel "Emmeline" then about to
proceed to Cronstadt - and the owners promised me
that his situation should be kept open for him - But
he sent me word that he had obtained work on the
26 Ulto_I therefore applied to Messrs Reason & Co the Owners
of the "Emmeline" what wages he would be entitled to from
the 9 ' to the 25 Ulto_ both days inclusive_ had he re-
_mained in thir employ to which they replied £5_17_8
as per paper annexed.
Also,
Thomas Steele the man who was at the Wheel
the time the Wreck took place_ and who was ex-
_amined at the first hearing_ I detained him
from going a run in a Vessel to the North for which
he was to have had 35s/__ He had not shipped [again?]
a few days ago_ therefore computing his loss of time
upon the same principal, as computed on the former
occasion for which see my letters of the 18 & 28 July last
and paying him for the same length of time as
Spetch_ his expenses would be as follows viz:
s d
