Sir,
I beg to acquaint you that recently
a large quantity of Foreign Tallow has been cast
on shore on the Coast in the neighbourhood of
Hornsea (a few miles North & South of that place)
The whole of it should have been delivered into
the Custody of the Revenue of Wreck for the district,
of which the inhabitants on the Coast are well
aware – However such as not been the case a portion
has been clandestinely brought to Hull and melted
down. I have therefore impounded the proceeds, and
I was informed yesterday that a portion had also
found its way to Beverley. I therefore sent two
Officers to your town to endeavour to get possession
of it. They called at the shop of Mr Westoby Tallow
Chandler Market place, who satisfactorily accounted
for the quantity he has in his possession. They
also called at the shop of Mr Ormslow who had
not any. But at the shop of Mr Yates there was
7 cwt. As Mr Yates was not at home they could
obtain no explanation about it, they therefore
requested your superintendant of Police Mr Daniel
Dove to again call and make enquiry about the
matter. They also requested Mr Dove to see the
country mounted Police, and request that the
