By the Morals-instinct is meant the spring of all that action whose direct quasi-purpose is the general good of society, insisting on propriety of behaviour, etiquette and morality, furthering coöperation, organization, regularization, arming the law against the criminal, arming society against the bohemian and the boor.

By the Magic-instinct is meant that ingredient of human nature which acts to bring the emotions to the service of publiculture, through religious rites and those of superstition.

By the War-instinct is meant the spirit which carries men into danger and which maddens them to bloodshed. These two, the spirit of adventure and the guillotinings-mania may be thought to be distinct. But at any rate, they may be classed together as highly energetic forms of instinctive publiculture. Man deludes himself so far as to suppose that in running risks and in killing, he is pursuing selfish ends of pleasure and of personal aggrandizement.
