instinctive knowledge of what is good to eat and drink. Babes in arms certainly have such an instinct. At this point, the health-instinct and the food-instinct are merged into one. There is, in addition, a second kind of connection between these two instincts. For experience shows that certain food and beverages are apt to disagree with people, and thus the desire to be well acts to modify the appetite for food and drink. This is a case of one instinct acting to further and guide the development of another without being indistinguishable from it. The health-instinct also merges in part with the clothes-instinct. For it tends to cleanliness in man as it does in animals. Now cleanliness is certainly an adornment. Again, the health-instinct merges with the play-instinct, in so far as it impells people to take exercise. For exercise is often a form of play, as in dancing, in solving puzzles, etc. Passing over many less striking phenomena, we note that
