1bα. The Constructional Sciences of Canal Transportation depend upon whether the canal is an ordinary land canal or whether it is a ship canal. A land-canal has to be surveyed, laid out, and constructed with locks, feeders, escapes, tow-path, bridges, etc. A boat can only be drawn through it at the rate of speed of the wave of translation, depending upon the depth of the canal.

1bβ. Ship-building is a vast collection of sciences. The present group of sciences must further include boat-building of every description. But the science of the marine steam-engine comes under the Sciences of Prime Motors.

1bγ. The building of submerged and penesubmerged boats.

1c. Vessels to sail the air are of four types. I consider them in such an order that sciences concerned with the construction of air-ships of different types may be classified under the first named class.
